The Orpington is a heavy, dual-purpose breed developed in England. Although Orpingtons now come in several different color varieties, the original black was developed in England in 1886 and brought to the US in 1890. They are very cold-hardy and are strong winter layers of brown eggs. They are known to be very docile and sometimes affectionate towards humans. The Buff is the most popular variety.

There are two main varieties of the Orpington chicken. There is the Buff Orpington, which features the typical Orpington build along with a yellowish (I.e., Buff) color, and then there is the Lavender Orpington. It has the same characteristics of the Buff, but with a lavender cloring.
